Go Ahead, Relax - You're On LBI
Just Over the Causeway
Once a place where native Lenni Lenape fished and clammed and privateers hid in the coves, where shipwrecks were common and white cedars grew thick, Long Beach Island is now an oasis for thousands of vacationers every summer. As you drive the two-mile Causeway over the bay toward the island you begin to sense it -something is different here. It's the salt sea air and the low roar of the surf, but there's something more. Some describe it as “peace of mind.” Whatever you call it, it keeps many thousands coming back, summer after summer, to the eighteen-mile-long barrier island off the coast of South Jersey.
The Causeway, officially the Dorland J. Henderson Memorial Bridge, is the only route onto and off of Long Beach Island. Once on the island, you can drive the eighteen miles from the Barnegat Lighthouse at the northern tip to the Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge at the south end, and never be more than a block or two from the ocean or the bay. Perhaps it's this proximity to the water that makes every home on LBI the perfect place to kick back and enjoy the island life.
The Island Life
A short walk to the ocean, and the fun begins! Swimming, boogie boarding, surfing, searching for starfish and mussels by the jetty, or just taking a long nap under the beach umbrella - LBI's famous sandy white beaches will captivate you. The gentle slope and light surf of the bay beaches are ideal for the littlest swimmers. If you prefer the boating life, try some deep sea fishing or sailing, or rent a personal watercraft or a couple of kayaks and explore the bay. Climb to the top of Barnegat Lighthouse for spectacular gull's-eye views of the island, ocean, Barnegat Bay, and Island Beach State Park, right across the inlet. For something a bit more daring, there's parasailing, windsurfing, or a trip to the water slides at Thundering Surf Family Fun Park.
Active families can choose from dozens of island attractions. Visit the rides and arcade at Fantasy Island Amusement Park, or play a round of miniature golf at one of the many neighborhood courses on the island. Rent a surrey for a pedal around the block, or catch a musical at the Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven and sing along with the servers at the Showplace Ice Cream Parlour afterward. Restaurant choices abound, from fine dining to snack bars, breakfast to midnight. Try some of LBI's fantastic seafood, fresh from the fleet in Barnegat Light, or treat yourself to gourmet Italian. In the mood for a party? Hop a Black Whale Cruise to Atlantic City, or enjoy the island nightlife - from high-powered rock clubs to quiet taverns, there's a place for everyone to unwind.
A Slower Pace
Whether you're here for a week or year round, you'll find that life runs just a bit slower on Long Beach Island. On a typical summer evening, the road along the ocean is busy with people reconnecting with themselves, with family, and with friends. Running, biking, and rollerblading. Walking in small groups, strolling babies, just “getting some air.” Spend a quiet afternoon at the Long Beach Island Historical Museum, or one of the public libraries in Surf City or Beach Haven. Explore your artistic side with a painting class at the Long Beach Island Foundation for the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies. For shoppers, the Boulevard is lined with every type of store, from specialty shops to old-fashioned “five-and-dime” style department stores. Whether it's antiques at Viking Village, wetsuits at Ron Jon Surf Shop, or LBI activewear at Bay Village, you can “shop till you drop” on LBI!
Ask any native, transplant, or veteran visitor - Long Beach Island is not just a place, it's an atmosphere, a feeling. It's simply unlike any other shore town you know. Maybe it's the memories - of childhood vacations, catching that first wave, after-dinner walks to the ice cream shop, a pocketful of quarters for the arcade. It's family reunions and friendly get-togethers, laughing and talking on the deck for hours, playing cards and catching up on leisure reading. It's surf fishing for stripers, and watching the sun set over the bay while the crabs are steaming on the stove. It's sitting on the corner waiting for your name to be called at your favorite restaurant, because you can't go home without a bowl of that award-winning chowder, or a plate of those chocolate chip pancakes. Go ahead, relax - you're on LBI.
